SUMMARY:The Palace Rhapsody
DESCRIPTION:Written when he was a 25-year-old student at the Sibelius Academy\, Rautavaara’s A Requiem in our Time won such praise that it prompted none other than Jean Sibelius himself to recommend him for a scholarship to Julliard. Ron Nelson’s Resonances I embraces chance and spontaneity\, while Aulis Sallinen’s Palace Rhapsody weaves neo-Romantic lyricism into modern soundscapes. \nThe concert culminates with Friedrich Gulda’s rollicking Cello Concerto\, scored for a Mozartian wind ensemble fused with a jazz rhythm trio\, blending classical virtuosity with playful unpredictability. The concerto alternates seamlessly between “jazz\, a minuet\, rock\, a smidgen of polka\, a march\, and a cadenza with two spots where the star cellist must improvise.” And the star: SSO’s very own cellist Jamshid Saydikarimov. \nFeaturing \nIvan Meylemans\, conductor\nJamshid Saydikarimov\, cello*\nWinds and Percussion of the SSO \nProgramme \nResonances I – Ron Nelson. arr. Meylemans (Singapore Premiere)\nA Requiem in Our Time\, Op. 3 – Einojuhani Rautavaara (Singapore Premiere)\nThe Palace Rhapsody – Aulis Sallinen (Singapore Premiere)\nConcerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra\, Op. 129* – Friedrich Gulda

SUMMARY:Home Shore: Formosa
DESCRIPTION:2026 Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra Concert in Taiwan | “Home Shore: Formosa” \n“Resonating from the world\, praised upon Formosa.” \nHome Shore: Formosa is a musical journey of “coming ashore from the world and returning to the land.” The program opens with classic European wind repertoire\, highlighting national memories and local color. SUMMARY:Ukiyo
DESCRIPTION:2026 Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra Concert in Taiwan | “Ukiyo” \nUkiyo does not convey a concrete story; rather\, it is a musical observation of existence\, order\, and emotion. It depicts the flux\, conflicts\, and fleeting moments of contemplation in the human experience. How individuals perceive the world and themselves amidst the hustle and bustle serves as the core proposition of this performance. \nThe concert opens with works rich in dramatic tension and satirical color\, guiding the audience through urban rhythms\, collective human emotions\, and theatrical intensity. Gradually\, the music detaches from concrete narrative\, shifting toward symbolism and philosophical reflection allowing sound to become another way of observing the world. \nThis performance features the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra\, alongside guest French horn soloist Kuan-Hao Chen. Within the highly collective soundscape of the wind orchestra\, individual voices can be clearly heard\, adding a more three-dimensional dimension to the role of the “individual” within the group. \nProgramme \nLeonard Bernstein: Candide Overture\nJames Beckel: The Glass Bead Game\nLeonard Bernstein:  On the Waterfront\nLeonard Bernstein: Symphonic Dances from West Side Story

SUMMARY:Alumni Series: Forget Me Not
DESCRIPTION:Forget Me Not is a theatrical concert that reimagines the identity of the twenty-first-century classical musician. Framed as a reunion between two YST alumni\, Howard the oboist and producer\, and Akkra the pianist and composer\, the performance becomes both a memory and a manifesto. It recalls what first connected them\, the shared passion for traditional arts\, and reflects on the ongoing struggle to adapt\, survive\, and remain meaningful in a rapidly changing world. \nThe title takes inspiration from the delicate flower\, symbolizing love\, fidelity\, devotion\, and fragility. In 1970\, during the conceptual art movement\, Dutch composer Louis Andriessen wrote Vergeet mij niet (Forget-Me-Not)\, a short work for an oboist who also plays the piano. He later revisited its spirit in The Memory of Roses\, a collection of personal miniatures balancing sentiment and irony. This concert draws from that lineage\, creating an experience that is political\, comedic\, absurd\, beautiful\, ugly\, and deeply human\, reflecting the diverse pathways YST graduates have taken and the Conservatory’s commitment to bold experimentation and artistic research. \nThrough piano and oboe music\, theatrical acting\, and multimedia\, the two artists retrace their divergent journeys: one shaped by creative production and community engagement\, the other by performance and artistic inquiry. Together they rediscover the beauty of the old\, the expressive depth of classical repertoire\, and the urgency of the new through innovative media\, cross-disciplinary storytelling\, and new ways of performing and composing. The concert asks what it means to stay musical when the industry no longer guarantees permanence. It celebrates the evolving possibilities of the classical artist as performer\, composer\, storyteller\, educator\, technologist\, and producer\, and affirms that artistry today flourishes through connection. \nPROGRAMME \nAn Alienated Artist\nEDVARD GRIEG\nSolitary Traveller\, Op. 43\, No. 2 (for piano solo) \nIncomplete\, but Sufficient\nEDWARD ELGAR\nSoliloquy (for oboe and piano) \nMirrors & Narcissus\, an Identity Crisis\nTHEA MUSGRAVE\nTake Two Oboes (for two oboes)\nIV. SUMMARY:Wagner's Siegfried
DESCRIPTION:A Semi-staged production \nPROGRAMME\nRICHARD WAGNER — Siegfried \nPerformers\nOrchestra of the Music Makers\nLü Shao-Chia\, conductor\nTan Shou Chen\, director \nVincent Wolfsteiner (Siegfried)\nDan Karlström (Mime)\nMichael Volle (Wanderer)\nAnna Harvey (Erda)\nJoachim Goltz (Alberich)\nLukasz Konieczny (Fafner)\nVictoria Li (Woodbird)\nStéphanie Müther (Brunnhilde) \nThe Orchestra of the Music Makers continues with the Singaporean premiere of the third instalment of Wagner’s Ring Cycle. Conductor Lü Shao-Chia\, director Tan Shou Chen\, and a cast of internationally acclaimed singers\, several of whom return to reprise their roles\, bring Wagner’s epic vision to life. \nRichard Wagner’s Ring Cycle stands as one of Western opera’s most ambitious undertakings—four works that reimagine Norse and Germanic mythology. Composed over three decades\, the cycle demands extraordinary forces and stamina from both performers and audiences\, but rewards them with some of the most transformative music ever written. \nIn Siegfried\, a young hero reforges his father’s broken sword and slays a dragon to claim a ring of power. He discovers a warrior woman trapped in an enchanted sleep\, surrounded by flames. Only someone truly fearless can reach her—and Siegfried has never learned what fear means. When he wakes her with a kiss\, she surrenders her immortality for love. \nSung in German with English surtitles.

SUMMARY:[Ones to Watch] Orchestral Institute: Echoes Beyond
DESCRIPTION:“To me the meanest flower that blows can give\nThoughts that do often lie too deep for tears.”\n— William Wordsworth\, from Ode: Intimations of Immortality \nThe most enduring echoes are not those we hear\, but those we carry with us. In Echoes Beyond\, the YST Orchestral Institute presents a programme of searching\, transformation and renewal\, reflecting on the enduring impact of a life well lived. \nThe evening opens with Charles Ives’ The Unanswered Question\, a ‘cosmic landscape’ of humanity’s eternal search for meaning\, followed by Richard Strauss’ Death and Transfiguration—a richly imagined depiction of an artist’s final moments\, from earthly struggle towards transcendence and fulfilment. \nWe are then joined by YST Head of Piano Studies Professor Albert Tiu and Cello Faculty Professor Qin Li-Wei in two contrasting reflections on memory and place: Harry Sdraulig’s Fantasia on Waltzing Matilda\, an imaginative reworking of Australia’s beloved bush ballad\, and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Spring Waters\, a vocal romance capturing spring’s triumphant arrival. \nThe evening culminates in Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3\, one of his most celebrated and demanding works\, performed by YST Concerto Competition 2026 Prizewinner Jiang Qifan (BMus3). \nEchoes Beyond honours the memory of longtime YST benefactor Mr Tan Kah Tee\, whose generosity transformed the educational journeys of countless YST students through his support of the Conservatory’s artistic and educational mission. His legacy lives on through the music\, the students and the community he so deeply believed in. \nSupported by the Shaw Foundation Ones to Watch series. \nPROGRAMME \nYST ORCHESTRAL INSTITUTE\nwith\nJASON LAI\, conductor\nand\nALBERT TIU\, piano\nQIN LI-WEI\, cello\nJIANG QIFAN (BMus3)\, piano \nCHARLES IVES\nThe Unanswered Question\, S.50 \nRICHARD STRAUSS\nDeath and Transfiguration\, Op. 24 \nHARRY SDRAULIG\nFantasia on Waltzing Matilda \nSERGEI RACHMANINOFF\nSpring Waters\, Op. 14\, No. 11\nPiano Concerto No. 3 in D minor\, Op. 30

SUMMARY:Orchestral Institute: Last Words
DESCRIPTION:What does an artist leave behind? A final work is rarely just an ending; it can be a summation\, a question\, or the beginning of another conversation. In this evening\, we explore how artistic voices become interwoven across time\, as composers’ final reflections continue to speak long after they were first heard. \nAaron Copland’s Night Thoughts\, one of the composer’s final works\, opens the evening in a world of introspection and quiet contemplation in homage to fellow American composer Charles Ives. This follows with Ruth Crawford Seeger’s Suite for Woodwind Quintet\, her penultimate composition before her death\, revealing the inventive spirit of one of America’s most original modernist voices. At the heart of the programme is Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto\, his final completed orchestral work\, written in memory of Manon Gropius and dedicated to “the memory of an angel”—a work that transforms grief into profound beauty. \nPresented by the YST Orchestral Institute under the baton of Principal Conductor Jason Lai\, and featuring YST Head of Strings Professor Qian Zhou on violin\, Associate Professor Ning An on piano\, guest musicians Gaolat Quintet and narrator Joseph N. Straus\, Last Words offers a rare opportunity to experience these deeply personal final statements in one single evening. \nPresented as part of Performers(‘) Present 2026: Interweaving. \nPROGRAMME \nAARON COPLAND\nNight Thoughts (Homage to Ives) \nNING AN\, piano\n \nRUTH CRAWFORD SEEGER\nSuite for Woodwind Quintet \nGAOLAT QUINTET:\nRACHEL HO\, flute\nGRACE TAN\, oboe\nSTEPHANIE TAN\, clarinet\nKEE RUIHAN\, bassoon\nXAVIER TAN\, horn\n \nALBAN BERG\nViolin Concerto \nQIAN ZHOU\, violin\nYST ORCHESTRAL INSTITUTE\nwith\nJASON LAI\, conductor

SUMMARY:VIVA Concerti: Where the Twain Shall Meet
DESCRIPTION:NIU NIU (Piano\, Violin)\nMetropolitan Festival Orchestra\nConductor Chan Tze Law (China\, Singapore) \nVIVA Concerti: Where the Twain Shall Meet is a landmark concert that brings together music\, culture and compassion in support of children with cancer. \nPresented in conjunction with VIVA Foundation’s 20th anniversary\, the concert reflects VIVA’s belief that hope\, healing and humanity transcend race\, language\, religion and nationality. \nPerformed by talented musician Niu Niu (Zhang Shengliang) and the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra under the baton of maestro Chan Tze Law\, the programme offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience these timeless masterpieces within a single evening\, creating a rich musical dialogue where East and West meet through the universal language of music. The concert itself marks a significant milestone in classical music performance. It is believed to be among the first occasions that a soloist and orchestra will present one movement each from eight different concertos in a single concert. This unprecedented concept not only celebrates the diversity and brilliance of the concerto repertoire but also reflects the concert’s overarching theme of connection\, bringing together different cultures\, traditions and musical voices in one extraordinary performance. \nAdding to the historic nature of the evening\, Niu Niu will perform not only as a pianist but also as a violinist for a short version of the Butterfly Lovers Concerto with the orchestra. He will perform a violin concerto movement with the orchestra\, marking the first time he has appeared publicly as a concerto soloist on the violin in Asia. The opportunity to witness a world-renowned pianist perform as both piano and violin soloist within the same concert is exceptionally rare and represents a remarkable artistic achievement. The concert symbolises Singapore’s role as a bridge between East and West\, bringing together musical traditions from different cultures in a spirit of friendship\, understanding and peace. \nCombining artistic innovation\, cultural exchange and philanthropy\, VIVA Concerti: Where the Twain Shall Meet promises to be a historic evening that celebrates the power of music to unite people and inspire hope for children and families affected by childhood cancer. \nProgramme \n1. SUMMARY:Orchestral Institute: Passage!
DESCRIPTION:A passage can be many things: a journey from one place to another\, the passing of time\, a musical phrase\, or the movement of the body. This unique collaboration expands the traditional orchestral concert by exploring the connections between music\, gesture and dance\, revealing new dimensions of two iconic masterpieces. \nStravinsky’s Divertimento from Le Baiser de la Fée (The Fairy’s Kiss) lies at the heart of this exploration. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ice Maiden and conceived as a tribute to Tchaikovsky\, it transforms melodies from the earlier composer’s songs and piano works into a vivid new musical language\, crossing boundaries between past and present\, memory and imagination. Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 offers a complementary journey\, its emotional intensity and remarkable craftsmanship providing fertile ground for fresh exploration through movement and gesture. \nWorking alongside the creative team\, the YST Orchestral Institute musicians become active participants in this artistic process\, discovering how movement can deepen musical expression and enrich orchestral storytelling. \nUnder the direction of Lien Boon Hua\, with creative collaborators choreographer Sudhee Liao and YST faculty Jonathan Shin and Professor Karst de Jong\, Passage! invites the audience to experience the orchestra as a living\, expressive ensemble\, where music\, movement and storytelling become one. \nPROGRAMME \nYST ORCHESTRAL INSTITUTE\nwith\nLIEN BOON HUA\, conductor\nand\nSUDHEE LIAO\, choreographer\nJONATHAN SHIN\, collaborator\nKARST DE JONG\, collaborator \nIGOR STRAVINSKY\nDivertimento\, from Le baiser de la fée \nWOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART\nSymphony No. 40 in G minor\, K.550
