VENTUS Sinfonica II

Media Release: VENTUS invites secondary school bands to share the stage and shape the programme at Sinfonica II ahead of SYF 2027

Singapore, 13 October 2026 – VENTUS will present Sinfonica II on 24 January 2027 at SOTA Concert Hall, featuring seven pieces selected through a public poll of secondary school bands participating in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) 2027 Arts Presentation, together with three premieres written by Singapore composers. This concert combines opportunities for musical learning, preparation for the SYF 2027, and a showcase for new local compositions.

Launched in October 2026, the poll invited students and band directors to share the choice pieces they are preparing for in the upcoming SYF 2027. The seven pieces receiving the most entries will form part of the concert programme as the most popular pieces selected by school bands.

Band directors from those schools will be invited to nominate two to three students, who will then rehearse and perform alongside VENTUS musicians. This offers valuable opportunities for the students to learn by observing how experienced players listen, respond and blend together, while gaining concert hall performance experience to help build confidence ahead of SYF.

“It’s a chance for students to stand alongside musicians outside their own school band, and to see what a career or a lifelong hobby in wind music can actually look like,” said Keith Kok, President of VENTUS.

The educational programme also extends to the participating schools’ band directors. Adrian Chiang, Music Director of VENTUS, will lead separate professional development sessions covering conducting techniques and rehearsal approaches for school bands, with podium time for the various band directors to lead VENTUS in a live rehearsal setting.

Other highlights of the concert include the premiere of three local compositions: a commissioned work by Germaine Goh, a new wind band arrangement of Syafiqah Adha’s Geylang Serai, and an updated edition of Zaidi Ramli’s Munnaeru Vaalibaa. These works are specially written to be playable by secondary school bands, taking into account the instrument and technical abilities typically found at that level. The aim is to introduce repertoire that band directors can bring into their own school programmes in the years ahead.

Together, Sinfonica II brings new Singapore wind band repertoire onto the same stage as young musicians who may become its next generation of performers and advocates.
